What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is an orthodontic option that uses clear aligners to shift your teeth into a healthier, more attractive position. It works on the same principle as traditional braces: carefully applied pressure is used to shift teeth over a period of time.
The difference is that Invisalign does not require any brackets, wires, or bands. In addition, you do not need to see an orthodontist for periodic tightening or adjustments. All of the Invisalign aligners are computer-designed for precise custom care from beginning to end.
How Invisalign Works
- Patients wear their aligners approximately 20 to 22 hours a day
- Patients remove their aligners to eat, drink, and clean their teeth
- After two weeks, patients switch to the next set of aligners in the series
The Benefits of Invisalign
Enjoy Your Favorite Meals
You don't need to avoid certain foods like you would with traditional braces. With Invisalign, you just have to remove your aligners while eating or when drinking any beverage other than water.
Oral Hygiene Is Easy
You won't need interdental brushes or floss threaders to keep your teeth clean. Just remove your aligners to brush and floss normally. Attend your routine cleanings and dental exams every six months.
Feel Confident in Your Appearance
Invisalign clear aligners are virtually unnoticeable. Even when someone is up close, they may not notice you have your aligners on. This kind of discretion cannot be achieved even with tooth-colored braces.
Comfortable and Simple Orthodontic Care
Invisalign doesn't have the irritating brackets involved with metal braces. Rather than tightening and adjustments by an orthodontist, patients simply come to our Arlington office for periodic checkups.

“Always the best service.”
“Always the best service. I've been visiting Smile Designer for over 10 years and they have yet to fail to take good care of me. They're professional, friendly, and flexible to their customer's needs.”

Invisalign Attachments
Invisalign does not use brackets and wires like braces do. However, Invisalign can use attachments to exert more force on certain teeth to make more complex tooth movements.
Attachments are small bumps of composite resin material that are applied to a patient's teeth. These bumps work like the brackets used in braces. The attachments give the clear aligners something to hold onto as they shift the position of a patient's teeth.
Tooth-Colored for a Natural Look
Invisalign attachments are tooth-colored, allowing them to blend in with your natural tooth structure. This allows Invisalign attachments to be far more discreet than normal braces.
Treating More Advanced Malocclusion
The advent of Invisalign attachments allows our orthodontist to treat more serious cases of malocclusion. That means more of our patients can achieve a straighter and healthier smile without wearing braces.

Have a Question?
Invisalign FAQ
Is Invisalign covered by insurance?
Your insurance plan may contribute to the cost of orthodontics, including Invisalign. We accept most dental insurances and will help you file the necessary paperwork to maximize your benefits.
Is Invisalign less expensive than braces?
Invisalign is comparable to the cost of braces, though this depends on factors like the severity of your case and the number of aligners you'll need. We accept dental insurance and allow patients to pay in monthly installments so your personalized treatment plan can fit comfortably into your budget.
Who can get Invisalign?
Teens and adults alike can benefit from Invisalign in Arlington, VA. Adults often prefer this option because they can experience the benefits of orthodontics without the stigma attached to adult braces. Teens prefer Invisalign because they can get straighter teeth while avoiding braces, which can be a source of self-consciousness.
When are braces a better option?
Clear aligners are effective, but there are times when traditional metal braces are the ideal treatment option. If your child won't remember to wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day, braces may be a better fit. If your malocclusion cannot be treated using attachments, we may recommend braces or more advanced orthodontic treatments. We offer both options at Smile Designer DDS.
Can I combine Invisalign with other treatments?
Yes! We offer a range of cosmetic dentistry options, and many of our Arlington patients choose to undergo a smile makeover that uses different treatments to completely overhaul the beauty of their smile. Invisalign is often the first step in this plan as it creates a healthy foundation for other treatments.
