Dentures

Missing teeth can not only be embarrassing, but can also impact your ability to eat and speak properly. Dentures are a natural-looking replacement for missing teeth that restore both appearance and function. Learn how dentures from the award-winning dentists at Smile Designer DDS in Arlington, VA, can help you smile again.

Implant-Supported vs Traditional Dentures

Depending on your dental needs and preferences, dentures can be implant-supported or traditional. There are a few key differences between the two types. At your initial consultation at our Arlington office, your dentist will discuss which type is right for you.

Traditional dentures rely on suction and denture adhesive to remain in place along the gums. Implant-supported dentures use titanium posts that are surgically placed into the jaw. Once the jawbone has healed, the dentures are secured to the dental implants, eliminating the need for adhesives. Implant-supported dentures are more stable, and implants are the only restorative dentistry treatment that can prevent the jawbone atrophy that occurs with tooth loss.

While traditional dentures need to be removed for cleaning, implant-supported dentures are treated just like natural teeth. They are only removed for dental cleanings by your dentist or hygienist.

Maximum Stability With Implant-Supported Dentures

Dental implants anchor dentures directly to the jaw.
Implant-supported dentures use titanium posts to anchor the denture in place. These implants provide maximum stability.

Benefits of Dentures

When you choose to receive dentures from our Ivy League trained dentists, you can experience a wealth of invaluable benefits:

Improved Quality of Life

Missing teeth can make it difficult to speak clearly or to chew your favorite foods. With dentures from our Arlington practice, you can eat the foods you love and speak normally once more.

Improved Oral Health

Tooth loss and decay can cause other oral health problems, such as infections. Extracting severely decayed or damaged teeth and replacing them with dentures can eliminate the risk of further dental issues.

Support to Surrounding Bone and Gum Tissue

Even a single missing tooth can cause bone and tissue degeneration, leading to bone loss and sagging facial features. Implants provide much-needed stimulation to the jawbone and gum tissue in place of missing tooth roots.

Prevent Excessive Wear on Remaining Natural Teeth

If you have remaining natural teeth, your bite force may be unevenly distributed, causing excessive wear on those teeth and even TMJ disorder symptoms. Dentures can restore a balanced bite, allowing you to eat and speak more naturally and distributing the wear along all teeth.

Boosted Self-Confidence

If you have been hiding your smile because you are embarrassed about missing teeth, our skilled team of dentists at Smile Designer DDS can give you the smile of your dreams with dentures. Whether you need a partial or full denture, we will give you a reason to smile with confidence.

Denture Treatment Timeline

Our dentures are crafted using high-quality materials like zirconia and porcelain and hand-finished for a stunning, lifelike appearance.
Our dentures are crafted using high-quality materials like zirconia and porcelain and hand-finished for a stunning, lifelike appearance.
This timeline for receiving dentures can vary based on each patient's dental needs. If dental implant placement, tooth extractions, or bone grafting are needed, these procedures must be done before your dentures can be created. The gums and jaw will be given time to heal following these procedures. With dental implants, the bone will need time to fuse to the implants in a process called osseointegration. This process typically takes three to six months.
When your gums and jaw are fully healed, our practice will use traditional or digital impressions to craft your custom, natural-looking dentures. Digital impressions eliminate the need for messy putty impressions of your gums and mouth. The impressions are sent to our trusted lab, where your dentures will be crafted using high-quality materials like zirconia or porcelain and hand-finished. It takes about four weeks for your dentures to be made and sent back to our Arlington, VA, practice.
Once your dentures are delivered, the dentist will make any needed adjustments to ensure proper fit and comfort. For implant-supported dentures, your dentist will secure your dentures to the dental implants. There is no need to remove them except for routine cleanings with your dentist.
It is normal to need additional appointments to make adjustments and achieve the right fit, function, and comfort. If you experience pain or discomfort with your dentures, it is important to tell your dentist so he or she can address your concerns and make the necessary alterations. We want you to be completely comfortable and happy with your new smile!
