Why Implant-Supported Dentures

Are Worth the Investment

While implant-supported dentures generally cost more than traditional dentures, their benefits are well worth the investment. Securely anchored to dental implants, they offer improved stability, comfort, and a natural feel, without the need for adhesives. At Smile Designer DDS, we believe the value you get for a traditional denture in terms of insurance coverage is poor, and implant-supported dentures are a much better investment. We believe our patients should opt for a high-quality solution from the start to save themselves time and money. If you prefer a more cost-effective solution, we can consider converting your current traditional denture into an implant-supported denture.

  • Benefits of Dentures

    Elevated Quality of Life

Missing teeth can make it difficult to speak clearly or chew your favorite foods. With dentures from our Arlington practice, you can eat the foods you love and speak normally once more.

  • Improved Oral Health

Tooth loss and decay can cause other oral health problems, such as gum disease and jawbone recession. Extracting severely decayed or damaged teeth and replacing them with dentures can eliminate the risk of further dental issues.

  • Boosted Self-Confidence

If you've been hiding your smile because you're embarrassed about missing teeth, our skilled team of dentists at Smile Designer DDS can give you the smile of your dreams with dentures. Whether you need a partial or full denture, we will give you a reason to smile with confidence.

  • Protected Enamel

If you have remaining natural teeth, your bite force may be unevenly distributed, causing excessive wear on those teeth and even TMJ disorders. Dentures can restore a balanced bite, allowing you to eat and speak more naturally and distributing the wear along all teeth.

  • Bone and Tissue Support

Even a single missing tooth can cause jawbone atrophy, leading to further tooth loss and sagging facial features. Implants provide much-needed stimulation to the jawbone in place of missing tooth roots.

Implant-Supported vs. Traditional Dentures Discover the Benefits of Dental Implants

Depending on your dental needs and preferences, dentures can be implant-supported or traditional. There are a few key differences between the two types. At your initial consultation at our Arlington dental office, your dentist will discuss which type is right for you.

Traditional dentures rely on suction and denture adhesive to remain in place along the gums. Implant-supported dentures use titanium implants that are surgically placed into the jaw. Once the jawbone has healed, the dentures are secured to the dental implants, eliminating the need for adhesives. Implant-supported dentures are more stable, and implants are the only restorative dentistry treatment that can prevent the jawbone atrophy that occurs with tooth loss.

While traditional dentures need to be removed for cleaning, implant-supported dentures are treated just like natural teeth. They are only removed for dental cleanings by your dentist or hygienist.

Denture Treatment Timeline

The timeline for receiving dentures in Arlington, VA, can vary based on each patient's dental needs, but typically involves these steps:

Our dentures are crafted using high-quality materials like zirconia and porcelain and hand finished for a stunning, lifelike appearance.
Our dentures are crafted using high-quality materials like zirconia and porcelain and hand finished for a stunning, lifelike appearance.

Preparatory Work

If dental implant placement, tooth extractions, or bone grafting are needed, these procedures must be done before your dentures can be created. The gums and jaw will be given time to heal following these procedures. With dental implants, the bone will need time to fuse to the implants in a process called osseointegration. This process typically takes three to six months.

Impressions

When your gums and jaw are fully healed, our practice will use digital impressions to craft your custom, natural-looking dentures. Digital impressions eliminate the need for messy putty impressions of your gums and mouth. The impressions are sent to a trusted lab that specializes in dentures, where your dentures will be crafted using high-quality materials like zirconia or porcelain and hand finished. It takes about four weeks for your dentures to be made and sent back to our Arlington, VA, office

Permanent Denture

Once your final dentures are delivered, your dentist will make any needed adjustments to ensure your dentures fit and feel comfortable. For implant-supported dentures, your dentist will secure your dentures to the dental implants. There is no need to remove them except for routine cleanings with your dentist.

Follow-Up Visits

It's normal to need additional appointments to make adjustments and achieve the right fit, function, and comfort. If you experience pain or discomfort with your dentures, tell your dentist so he or she can address your concerns and make the necessary alterations. We want you to be completely comfortable and happy with your new smile!
